Incline Village Between Seasons: The October Dates That Shape the Winter

On Sunday, October 18, two things happen at about the same time in Incline Village. The Championship Course has its last scheduled day of the season, and at the top of Diamond Peak's upper parking lot, the Community Ski & Snowboard Swap runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next to the Ski Team Building. In Incline, summer and winter overlap that weekend.

Planned opening day is still about eight weeks out. Most of the decisions that shape a resident's winter come well before the first chair: where the dog can run, which lot takes your card on SR 28, and what a season pass costs. Those decisions fall in the second half of October, and some carry a price tag.

The shoreline changes over in one week

The lakeshore changes in steps from Sunday to Sunday. These are the dates as IVGID and Nevada State Parks currently list them:

  1. October 11. IVGID's golf page lists the Mountain Course as open through this date. The Mountain Course's own page still lists the 2026 closing date as TBD, so check with the pro shop before booking a late tee time.
  2. October 15. IVGID's restricted-access beaches enter their typical off-season, which runs to April 15.
  3. October 16. Leashed dogs are allowed back at Sand Harbor, on a leash no longer than six feet, through April 14.
  4. October 17. Diamond Peak holds its second winter job fair, 9 to 11 a.m.
  5. October 18. Last listed day on the Championship Course, and the ski swap.

For dog owners, the two beach systems switch places that week. Once IVGID's beaches close for the season, dogs are allowed only on Ski Beach, west of the boat ramp, and only with an owner who has beach access. The next day, Sand Harbor opens its leash season. In summer, Sand Harbor was the place for a beach day without the dog. From mid-October to mid-April, it's one of the two lakeshore spots near town where the dog can come along.

Getting in is also easier now. The day-use reservations Sand Harbor requires from May 15 to September 30 have ended. Entry is now a regular vehicle fee of $10 with Nevada plates or $15 without, and the park is open from 8 a.m. to one hour after sunset. To see how much that changes, look at summer. Moonshine Ink reported that the main gates were usually closed by 11 a.m. from June through August. State Parks says the lots are kept clear of snow in winter and the Visitor Center is open year-round. The boat launch is closed for the season.

At the Championship Course, holes 4 through 6 are closed until further notice for cart-path pavement replacement. A cart escort takes players from hole 3 to hole 7. Golfers playing their last round of the year should expect a shorter course than in midsummer.

October 31 is the deadline that costs money

The changes along the shore are about where you can go. The next deadline is about cost. Diamond Peak's preseason pass rates end October 31, and the higher prewinter rates apply from November 1 through December 18. For IVGID pass holders, the increase looks like this:

IVGID pass-holder rate Preseason, through Oct. 31 Prewinter, Nov. 1 to Dec. 18 Increase
Adult $412 $513 $101
Youth $248 $309 $61
Senior $259 $309 $50
Child $141 $170 $29
Super-senior $113 $136 $23
Ages 6 and under, 80 and over Free Free None

The public rates go up by more. An adult public pass is $588 through October and $733 from November 1, a $145 increase. The transferable pass doesn't change, at $1,269 in both tiers. For IVGID pass holders, the pass-holder schedule adds a new Regular tier from December 19 through early March. After opening day, then, prices change once more.

The Recreation Punch Card doesn't help here. IVGID's 2026–27 punch card stored value is $173 per card for parcels with beach access and $157 for those without. The card doesn't qualify for the discounted season-pass rates. It can cover the difference between the regular lift-ticket price and the IVGID pass-holder rate on a day ticket, but the pass-holder rate itself is still payable. For someone who expects to ski only a handful of days, comparing those two routes is worth the ten minutes before October 31. The Diamond Peak season pass page lists every category.

SR 28 after the summer shuttle

The summer shuttle along SR 28 is already done for the year. The free East Shore Express ran daily from Incline Village to Sand Harbor, using Tunnel Creek parking, and its 2026 season ended September 12. East Shore Trail walks this fall start from a parked car.

Parking at the Ponderosa lot north of Ponderosa Ranch Road still costs money. The Tahoe Transportation District's posted rates cover 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from March through November, with a fall rate period from September 10 to November 30. TTD hasn't published a December-to-February rate. It also says its lots may be inaccessible under heavy snowpack, and that winter use is at the visitor's own risk.

Construction next to that lot is supposed to wrap up this season. The SR 28 North Parking Project adds 38 paid spaces to the existing 90-space trailhead lot. It also adds a southbound transit shelter north of Lakeshore Drive and restoration work at Rocky Point. TTD's schedule calls for construction to end in fall 2026 but doesn't give an exact date. Its FAQ warns of shoulder closures throughout the work and possible short, flagger-controlled single-lane closures. On fall afternoons, a brief stop on the highway near the trailhead is still possible.

Farther south, the Chimney Beach Trailhead lot opened in June with about 130 spaces at $12 a day and a pedestrian crosswalk across SR 28. Over the summer, Moonshine Ink reported that the lot filled on weekends but less on weekdays. The extended no-parking zone around it has also been ticketed. Those were summer conditions, and fall weekdays should be quieter. The rules still apply on any weekday, though, so a quick shoulder stop for a sunset walk now risks a ticket.

Indoors, and the days in between

The Incline Recreation Center at 980 Incline Way is finishing an HVAC replacement that IVGID expects to wrap up in mid-to-late October. Until then, patrons should expect construction noise, changes in airflow, limited access to some areas and possible short-term changes to operations. Regular hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The center closes on Thanksgiving, November 26, and opens from noon to 8 p.m. on Family Day, November 27. IVGID posts the pool schedule monthly and notes that it can change without notice.

Both IVGID beach cafes are closed for the year. The beach page lists Burnt Cedar food service and Ski Beach food and beverage service as closed until May 2027. At Incline Beach, work on the new beach house is forecast to finish in mid-summer 2027.

When the beach cafes close, dinner moves indoors to the Country Club mall and Tahoe Boulevard. Paxton's has reopened the former Austin's space at 120 Country Club Drive #24 under new local owners, with scratch cooking and seasonal dishes that change often. At the Hyatt, the former Lone Eagle Grille space is under construction as a Nobu, and the former Sierra Cafe is now Osteria Sierra, a northern Italian osteria.

Halloween events fill two afternoons in late October. Spooky Harbor's Fall Festival and Monster House is at Sand Harbor State Park on Friday, October 23, starting at 4 p.m. IVGID's free Trail of Treats & Terror runs Thursday, October 29, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Village Green and Fitness Trails, 960 Lakeshore Blvd.

The first week of December

Diamond Peak plans to open on Thursday, December 3, conditions permitting, according to its September 29 announcement. The resort's separate opening-day page still lists the date as TBD. It notes that Diamond Peak usually opens in the first or second week of December and asks skiers to check back in mid-November. Treat December 3 as the target, and expect the snow to decide.

This winter is still part of the resort's 60th anniversary. Ski Incline opened on November 19, 1966, and Diamond Peak plans more retro "$60 Days" for lift tickets and learn-to-ski packages. Local artist Bryn Merrell designed a commemorative anniversary poster based on a panoramic lake view from the slopes. Free copies are available at Diamond Peak events and at the Diamond Peak Sports Shop in the Base Lodge. New this season are longer 2.5-hour beginner lessons, upgraded snowmaking guns and a Get Lifted Coffee + Waffles trailer on busy weekends and holidays. There will also be après-ski DJ events on select Fridays.

The Incline Village Crystal Bay Association's Northern Lights Festival begins the same week. Its 2026 schedule lists Tahoe Film Fest from December 4 to 7. Diamond Peak's Alibi season-kickoff party and the Lake Tahoe School Holiday Markets are on December 5. The community celebration at UNR at Lake Tahoe's Prim Library and Brunch with Santa are on December 6. If the mountain opens on schedule, that's four days with the first lift ride, a film festival, a holiday market and a community gathering.

Further out, Diamond Peak's Snowflake Lodge replacement is still at the design stage. The board approved a 30% design contract for a preliminary 11,600-square-foot concept, with community review expected in early 2027.

The off-season calendar changes the value of a home, too. Access to Ski Beach for a dog in January or a pass-holder rate at Diamond Peak counts for as much as summer lake access, and I like talking through those details with owners and buyers in Incline Village.
